What Rules and Rituals Must Pilgrims Follow During the Sammed Shikharji Yatra

The Sammed Shikharji Yatra is not an ordinary trek. For Jains, Parasnath Hill in Jharkhand's Giridih district is the ground where 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras attained moksha, making it the most sacred Tirtha in the entire faith. Because the hill itself is treated as a living temple, the yatra comes with a code of conduct that pilgrims are expected to observe with sincerity — from the moment they arrive in Madhuban to the moment they complete the 27 km parikrama. If you're planning your first Sammed Shikharji Yatra, here is a complete breakdown of the rules, rituals, and etiquette you'll need to know. Purification Rituals Before the Climb The yatra begins long before you set foot on the hill. Bathing and mental preparation: Pilgrims bathe and offer prayers at Madhuban before starting the climb, treating the yatra as an act of purification, not just a physical journey. Fasting or partial fasting: Many devotees observe a full fast, or ekasana (a single meal a day), on the day of the yatra as a mark of discipline and devotion. Physical readiness: Since the trek covers steep, uneven terrain for several hours, walking practice in the weeks before the yatra is strongly recommended. Arriving a day early: Most pilgrims reach Madhuban a day in advance to rest, complete darshan at the base temples, and prepare mentally before the pre-dawn start. Dress Code and Personal Conduct Simplicity and modesty define the dress code on the hill. Plain white or light-coloured clothing is traditionally worn during the Tongi Parikrama. Bright, flashy, or tight clothing is discouraged, as it goes against the spirit of humility the yatra demands. Footwear must be removed before entering any tonk or temple premises. Leather items — belts, wallets, bags, or leather shoes — are not permitted on the hill, in keeping with the Jain principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Strict Food and Lifestyle Rules Parasnath Hill and the surrounding Madhuban area enforce some of the strictest dietary codes of any pilgrimage site in India. Pure vegetarian zone: No non-vegetarian food is allowed anywhere on the hill or in Madhuban — this is enforced by local authorities, not just by custom. No root vegetables: In line with Jain food principles, meals served in Madhuban avoid root vegetables, sticking to fresh or boiled ingredients. No alcohol or tobacco: Both are strictly prohibited throughout the pilgrimage area. No loud music or entertainment: The hill is meant for quiet reflection, not celebration. Rituals to Perform at Each Tonk The heart of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra is the visit to the 20 tonks — shrines marking the exact spots where each Tirthankara attained liberation. At every tonk, pilgrims perform vandana (salutation), offering rice, sandalwood, and lamps, and pause for prayer and reflection. Many pilgrims recite stotras or engage in silent meditation at each shrine, treating the walk between tonks as part of the ritual itself, not just transit. Photography inside tonk temples is often restricted, and permission should always be sought before photographing rituals, sadhus, or sadhvis. Timing Rules: Why the Yatra Can't Wait for Sunset This is one of the most important — and non-negotiable — rules of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra. The climb typically begins between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM, well before sunrise. There are no facilities to stay overnight on the hill, so the entire 27 km circuit must be completed and pilgrims must descend before dark. Starting early also helps pilgrims avoid the afternoon heat and reach Gandharva Nala — the main refreshment point on the route — with enough time to rest before the return. Doli and Palki Etiquette Not every pilgrim can complete the full trek on foot, and the tradition accounts for this. Elderly pilgrims or those with mobility issues can hire a doli or palki (a traditional palanquin) carried by local porters, available at the base in Madhuban. Costs vary depending on the number of carriers and the season, so it's worth confirming rates in advance, either directly or through your tour operator. Pilgrims are expected to negotiate fairly and treat porters with respect — they are an essential part of making the yatra accessible to all. Respecting the Sacred Environment Because the hill is considered sacred, environmental and community respect is treated as part of the ritual itself. No littering: Pilgrims are asked to carry back their own waste; plastic is discouraged on the trail. Silence on the trail: Loud conversation is avoided, both out of respect for the sanctity of the site and for the forest wildlife along the route. Respect for local communities: The hill also holds spiritual significance for the indigenous Santal community, who revere it as the home of their deity, Marang Buru — a reminder that the mountain is sacred ground shared with reverence by more than one tradition. Best Time for the Sammed Shikharji Yatra Most pilgrims plan their Sammed Shikharji tour between October and March, when the weather is cool enough for the long climb. Summers are harsh, and monsoon months make the stone paths slippery, so winter remains the preferred window — especially around festivals like Paryushana and Mahavir Jayanti, when the hill sees the highest footfall. Planning a Guided Sammed Shikharji Tour Given the early-morning start, the strict rules, and the physical demands of the 27 km parikrama, many pilgrims — especially families, senior citizens, or first-time visitors — prefer to join an organised Sammed Shikharji Yatra by Vardhman Vacations rather than plan the logistics on their own. A guided tour typically takes care of: Meet-and-greet on arrival at Parasnath, Dhanbad, Ranchi, or Deoghar Comfortable stays in Madhuban dharamshalas or hotels Structured darshan of the Taleti temples — Jahaj Mandir, Kanch Mandir, Bhaktamar Mandir, and the 20 Jinalay — before the pre-dawn Pahad Yatra Doli booking assistance and guidance on hill etiquette for those unfamiliar with the rules Whether you walk the entire route barefoot as an act of devotion, or opt for a doli with the support of a well-planned Sammed Shikharji tour, the rules exist for one reason: to help every pilgrim approach this hill the way it has been approached for over two thousand years — with humility, discipline, and an open heart. Final Thoughts The Sammed Shikharji Yatra asks more of a pilgrim than most journeys — silence instead of noise, restraint instead of indulgence, and discipline instead of comfort. But that is precisely what makes it transformative. Every rule, from the dress code to the pre-dawn start, is designed to keep the focus where it belongs: on the 20 Tirthankaras who once walked this very ground toward liberation.
